1. Project Summary:

GJUS implementing a sub-project title on “Income Generation of the entrepreneurs through production and marketing of Fisheries product’’ under Promoting Agricultural Commercialization and Enterprises (PACE) project. roject funded by International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) assist by Palli Karma-sahayak Foundation (PKSF). Bhola is an island with lots of natural resources specially fisheries resources. The standard of living of Bhola district fishermen is lower than other regions. Despite the huge potential for fish farming, the amount of farmed fish is very low. Fishermen community totally dependent on fish harvesting from river, sea, estuary and other waterbodies. In order to create alternative employment for the fishermen of this region, activities are underway for fish farming and making various products from fish. Fishermen using banned behundi fishing have been trained up and make aware about the effects of behundi net and support them for making sea-going boat and provide modern fishing technology on their boat. Few new technologies introduced to the fishermen, fish farmer and dry fish producer such as; provide GPS and Fish finder device on fishing boat, probiotic use in the fish pond and established a native fish hatchery, established fisheries service center at local area. Install fish dryer and bamboo loft for dry fish making, establish multigrade filter and Sand filter for safe ice production, developed fish landing center for enhancing fish landing, transportation and marketing. Distribute life jacket, fast aid box, and rain coat to the fishermen for their safety. Established mini fish processing plant for ready to cook fish product production at household level.

Goals:  Livelihood development of the coastal fishermen community through safe fisheries production and market development.

Objectives:

• Increase income through fish and fisheries product production using modern method.
• Creating alternative income opportunities by creating sustainable employment.
•  Market system development of quality fish and fisheries product.
• Increasing the income of entrepreneurs by dealing with the losses of Covid-19.

The project output

Certain outputs have been identified under the project, where the income of the banned behundi net users will increase by 200% at the end of the project as well as income of the fishermen will increase by 500% from fish farming and more than 20 acre abandoned waterbodies will come under fish farming, dry fish users income will increase by 100% from present time and 8 ton ready to cook product will produced at the end of the project. 

A list of 11,000 members was prepared through house visits, of which 3,155 were micro-entrepreneurs, 7,225 were poor, and 620 were very poor. Where 73% male and 27% female members are enrolled.
