Overcoming the Climate Crisis

Living in the riverine village of Chatkimara, Bhola, Md. Monjur Alam lost his primary source of income when severe 2024 cyclones and floods destroyed his paddy fields and homestead. Early attempts to pivot to goat rearing failed due to poor housing conditions and climate-induced disease outbreaks, leaving his family under heavy financial strain.

The Turning Point

In 2025, Monjur connected with the Resilient Homestead and Livelihood Support (RHL) Project, implemented by GJUS. Joining the Tetulia-7 Climate Change Adaptation Group (CCAG), he received practical training on climate-resilient livestock management and was provided with a slatted goat house.

Equipped with proper infrastructure and improved practices, Monjur and his wife expanded their herd from two to seven goats, drastically reducing disease risks and protecting the animals from extreme weather.

Impact & Results

• Financial Resilience: Earned BDT 58,500 by selling four fattened goats during Eid-ul-Adha, allowing him to fully repay an NGO loan and purchase additional livestock.

• Business Reinvestment: Used surplus profits to expand his home-adjacent tea stall, significantly boosting daily income.

• Family Well-being: Goat milk now provides daily nutrition for his children, while his stable BDT 18,000/month income secures their ongoing education.
